Could for-profit colleges be the educational equivalent of the subprime-mortgage market?

That’s one warning raised Thursday by a witness at a Senate hearing, as the schools come under government scrutiny for alleged practices driven more by profit margins than by educational goals.

Although nonprofit institutions still make up the majority of US colleges and universities, enrollment at for-profit colleges has grown by more than 200 percent in the past decade. Their flexible and convenient offerings, including online degrees, have been especially attractive to adult working students.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina legislators will get a briefing on how state revenues are creating a $563 million hole in the proposed spending plan for the next fiscal year as they return to work.

It's one of the first things facing lawmakers Tuesday as they return to Columbia for their January-to-June session.

Closing that gap likely will involve less money for schools, social services, health care and law enforcement. Legislative leaders have said they won't pass a general tax increase, but instead will concentrate on raising the state's reserves as a buffer to future economic slowdowns.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina legislators will take up a rebuke of Gov. Mark Sanford and try to quickly turn to issues tied to recession-wrecked state finances, new lawsuit limits and property tax breaks.

While they'll talk about tax breaks in the midst of plans to cut state spending by 20 percent, legislators will also talk about raising the nation's lowest cigarette tax.

House Speaker Bobby Harrell expects the House to quickly deal with a resolution rebuking Sanford for travel and spending issues that came to light after his June confession of an affair with an Argentine woman. The censure measure castigates Sanford for 'dereliction in his duties of office, for official misconduct in office and for abuses of power while in office that has brought ridicule and dishonor to himself, the state of South Carolina, and to its citizens.'
